POLICE are investigating what appears to be the illegal shooting of six brumbies in the Brindabella State Forest last month.
Campers found the decomposed carcasses of three horses, a mare, a foal and a colt, in the first week of April and reported the find to police.
Three more horse bodies have since been found.
Cootamundra detective Archie French said the brumbies appeared to have been shot with a high-powered rifle, but it was difficult to tell because of the state of the bodies.
A similar incident occurred in 2009 when several horses were found shot in the forest around the same time of year.
No charges were ever laid.
