REGIONAL Victorians are being urged to register for organ donation.

Discussing the decision with family members is also integral, according to the Organ and Tissue Authority's national medical director Jonathan Gillis.

Dr Gillis said only 1-2 per cent of deaths in hospitals could lead to a donation.

"There are two situations that might occur," Dr Gillis said. "If there are donors in country centres the surgeon can go up to the place and they remove the organs and take them back with them.

"If the person wanted to donate their organs and the relative agrees, the person could also be transferred (to a transplant hospital).

"Obviously it has (to) be very clear with the relative what's going on," Dr Gillis said.
