BRANXHOLME-Wallacedale kicked off its season with a 193-point loss in the South West District league.

Last week the club announced it was withdrawing its reserves team on the eve of season.

The Saints will field only a senior team this year, after the league's eight other clubs agreed to the move at a meeting last Wednesday.

The club's decision came after South West clubs unanimously turned down the Saints' request to play the season without seniors.

Last year's wooden spooner Cavendish monstered the Saints 31.23 (209) to 2.4 (16) on Saturday.

The Saints failed to kick a goal in the first half.

Branxholme-Wallacedale president Michael Holcombe said the Saints would try to strengthen their sole side.
