THE union representing Catholic teachers has been ordered to "cancel" next week's mass strike.
About 5000 Catholic teachers and support staff have been planning to join up to 30,000 public-school colleagues on Wednesday, in what would be the biggest stop-work in Victoria's history.
However Fair Work Australia has banned the Independent Education Union from "organising or encouraging" members to participate in the strike.
In a judgment handed down on Friday, the industrial umpire ordered the "industrial action (by the IEU) must stop and not be organised".
IEU state secretary Debra James last night condemned the ruling, which followed an application by the Catholic
Education Commission of Victoria, on behalf of Catholic school employers.
"For staff in Catholic schools to exercise their right to political protest is consistent both with Catholic social teachings and past practice," she said.
