EAST Gippsland is copping lashing rain and thunderstorms and the bureau is tipping more wild weather this afternoon.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued weather warnings for parts of Gippsland urging residents to beware of flash flooding and large hailstone for the next several hours.

It flags areas like Bright, Lakes Entrance, Bairnsdale, Orbost, Omeo, Falls Creek and Mt Hotham as places likely to be hit.

BOM forecaster Peter Newham said a cell had just moved over eastern Victoria but there were other cells lurking that could develop this afternoon.

"The main concern at the moment is for large hail or burst of heavy rainfall that could lead to flash flooding," Mr Newham said.

"There's also a risk of gusty winds as well."

Just before 5pm,  Bairnsdale receivecd 13.6mm of rain while Lakes Entrance and Omeo have had 22.4mm and 28.6mm respectively.

The SES has advised that residents in affected areas move cars under cover and stay indoors if possible.

Residents are also warned not to use phones and to switch off appliances during storms.
