TRUCK drivers are encouraged to have a cuppa at Loch, off the South Gippsland Highway, next week to talk about road safety.

It is part of a heavy vehicle road safety initiative aimed at reducing the number of serious crashes in the area involving trucks and heavy machinery.

The snags, tea and scones will be on offer between 11am and 5pm on Thursday next week.

Drivers will be able to learn about a near-miss reporting system set up by one transport operator and find out how the police are tracking down misbehaving motorists who nearly run trucks off the road.

A bad crash last year, in which a fuel tanker rolled over and cleaned up the veranda posts of the top pub at Korumburra, has led to reduced speed limits on the corner, from 40km/h to 20km/h.
