A SIX-YEAR-OLD girl is recovering in hospital after she was mauled by a dog in Tamworth in NSW. 

The girl suffered serious injuries to her legs when she was attacked by the crossbreed dog in the backyard of a house at about 3.15pm today, police said.

The child's mother and grandmother managed to free her from the dog before calling an ambulance.

The girl was taken to Tamworth Base Hospital and then flown to John Hunter Hospital for further treatment.

Tamworth police said the girl was still in hospital recovering from the attack.

The dog's owners intend to surrender it to the council for destruction, police said in a statement.

Police inquiries into the incident are continuing.
