FIREFIGHTERS remain at the scene of a scrub fire near Ballarat's Sovereign Hill after it burnt about 10ha of land last night.

The fire authority told Weekly Times Now this morning the fire was contained and people could expect smoke across the region for most of the day as crews continued work to put the fire out.

A CFA spokeswoman said the scrub fire was reported about 12.40am at Golden Point and was brought under control within an hour.

"It's contained now but it is expected to burn for most of the day. It's in an old mine area. It's quite difficult to access," she said.

At the height of the fire, the CFA had 10 fire trucks and several support units at the scene.

The spokeswoman said traffic would be affected along Main Rd, Tinworth Ave and Lesworth St.

The cause of the fire isn't known.
