A YOUNG girl has died in hospital after she was found unconscious in her backyard in Bairnsdale yesterday afternoon.

Crime Investigation Units are investigating after the six-year-old was discovered by family members near play equipment on the Anderson St property about 4.30pm, the Herald Sun reports.

She was taken to Bairnsdale Hospital where she later died.

Victoria Police spokeswoman Julie-Anne Newman said police were treating the death as non-suspicious.

Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said the girl was suffering from cardio-respiratory arrest and was treated by paramedics at the scene as well as en route to Bairnsdale Hospital, where she later died.

Neither Victoria Police nor Ambulance Victoria would comment on whether the girl had sustained any injuries.

Police are preparing a report for the Coroner.
