A FIRE that threatened eight South Australian homes and came within 5km of the Port Lincoln town fringe has been controlled.

The Coomunga fire that has been burning since Tuesday was estimated to be within three hours of impacting on Port Lincoln.

The fire directly threatened eight homes and burnt more than two thousand hectares of scrub and grassland but resulted in no major injuries or property damage.

Although the fire has been declared "controlled" today, about 50 firefighters will continue to monitor the area.
