NEWTOWN and Chilwell has won the battle for the prized services of three-time Geelong premiership player David Wojcinski.

Wojcinski committed to the Eagles last week and joins the Geelong league club as both a player and a development coach.

The 32-year-old had been highly sought after by a number of local clubs after retiring from AFL footy at the end of this season.

The 203-game veteran will work closely with the Eagles' junior academy and development program.

The appointment is a perfect fit for the line-breaking defender, who had shown a genuine interest in becoming a development coach since bowing out with a VFL premiership this year.

Eagles president Ian Spolding confirmed the deal yesterday.

"(We) are delighted to advise that David has agreed to terms and conditions that will see him join Newtown as a player for the 2013 season," he said in a statement.

"Senior coach Jacob Spolding, together with the playing group, are looking forward to David's contribution as we approach season 2013."

The Eagles have been ambitious recruiters over the past two seasons, and last year pulled off a double coup by luring former Geelong players Brad Ottens and Ryan Gamble to the club.

Gamble is halfway through a two-year deal, while it appears likely Ottens will retire. The club is looking to take the next step in 2013 after back-to-back semi-final exits.
