UELI Berger can truly call this year's Top Cheese at the Australian Grand Dairy Awards a life's work.

"I helped make that cheese," the head cheesemaker said at the awards presentation in Melbourne on Monday.

"Thirty-four years ago I came out from Switzerland, that was one of the reasons I came out to Australia, the job was offered to me. "I was the pick of 48 applications."

Berger's Tasmanian Heritage St Claire, produced by Lion, also won the semi-hard and eye cheese class at the prestigious dairy awards.

Bulla Premium Sour Cream was awarded the grand champion dairy product, while Warrnambool Cheese and Butter received a gong for the best milk for Sungold Jersey Milk, and two of Lion's Mil Lel brand cheeses won categories.

Jindi Cheese took out the champion blue cheese, white mould cheese and washed rind categories.
