EMPTY chairs at a dinner table make for a terribly sad sight. Memorials in Ballarat and Southbank today mark lives lost on Victorian roads.

A Place to Remember is a table with 257 places set, the number of lives lost on Victorian roads this year.

The long table in Ballarat's Bridge Mall, pictured to the right, features 139 white chairs to highlight the number of live lost on country roads.

People can leave tributes or a candle in memory of someone.

The tables will remain set until 8pm.

The TAC is pleading with drivers to slow down and drive safely this holiday season.
