RESCUE workers are desperately trying to free a woman trapped after a car rolled off a cliff on the Great Ocean Road this afternoon.
A man in the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene, about 4.30pm, the Herald Sun reports about 7pm.
Police and rescue helicopters were called to an area near the Cape Patton lookout, east of Apollo Bay, where it is believed the car drove through a guard rail.
The female passenger sustained a fractured leg and pelvis and chest injuries according to an Ambulance Victoria spokesperson.
She will be airlifted to The Alfred hospital once crews can secure her from the cliff.
The spokesperson said rescue workers were trying to winch the victim to safety, but the position of the car had made the task difficult.
Apollo Bay police said the accident was horrific.
