COOLER weather is expected for Sydney today but northern NSW is in for another scorcher.

Sydney will reach low to mid mid-20s after yesterday's scorcher.

But the state's north is forecast to swelter in extreme heat.

The weather bureau says Moree in northern New South Wales is in for temperatures of up 41C.

The hottest place in the state yesterday was Coonamble in the central west with 42.8C.
