TAMWORTH has been hit with hailstones as big as cricket balls as severe storms lash the northern tablelands of NSW.

The bureau of meteorology said a storm watcher in Tamworth reported cricket ball sized-hail, while 98km/h wind gusts have also been recorded.

Severe thunderstorms are predicted to produce large hailstones and damaging winds in locations including Grafton, Scone, Armidale, Tenterfield, Glenn Innes, Inverell, Casino, Tabulam, Maclean Dorrigo and Glenreagh.

The bureau said the weather has already caused window and roof damage in Tamworth.

The SES has received more than 100 requests for help after the storm.
