PEOPLE living in Toorak have recorded the highest average income in Australia.

But country areas continue to struggle.

Using tax data, the Australian Bureau of Statistics has provided a breakdown of annual personal incomes across the nation.

Victoria's five top-earning regions are in Melbourne: Toorak was on $132,252, followed by Brighton ($101,776), East Melbourne ($95,349), Albert Park ($91,871) and Armadale ($89,534).

The highest average total incomes outside Melbourne were in the Geelong suburb of Newtown ($56,512) and in Woodend ($50,960).

Other regions with high average total incomes were Torquay on $48,553, Geelong on $48,528 and Traralgon on $48,344.

The lowest incomes were recorded in Loddon ($27,942) and Gannawarra shires ($28,591).
