FIREFIGHTERS battling a dangerous a bushfire on Queensland's Western Downs are confident they've got the upper hand.

The fire is burning near Dalby and forced the evacuation of about a dozen rural properties yesterday.

Fire crews spent the night building containment lines after the fire blackened 21,000ha of forest and grassland in recent days.

Queensland Fire and Rescue Service acting superintendent Col Neal said crews had the fire contained and no homes were at risk.

"They're fairly confident that they'll be able to control this fire within containment lines now and we should be able to tidy this one up in the next few days," he told the ABC.

He said most residents had returned to their homes.

Meanwhile, the fire threat in Queensland's far north has eased after rain.

Fires still burning in the region are under control.
