HUMID and tropical conditions today brought almost 50mm of rainfall to Victorian towns in only a few hours.

The weather bureau recorded 49mm between 9am and 4pm in Mt Hotham.

Falls Creek received 40mm and Mt Bulla recorded 35mm.

Storms also lashed the northwest of the state including Mildura, passing across Melbourne before hitting east Gippsland, the Herald Sun reports.

Senior forecaster Richard Carlyon said the soggy conditions were over and he expected lower temperatures tomorrow.

"We have had some really tropical conditions across the state in the past few days,'' Mr Carlyon said.

"Generally across the northeast of the state there has been 10 to 30mm of rain.

"But we will have much less humid conditions across the state and it is going to be much cooler.''

A top of 29C was recorded in Mildura, Echuca and Mangalore before the storms.
