WIMMERA irrigators will start receiving payments after the sale of water entitlements to the Commonwealth was confirmed today.

Water minister Peter Walsh today said negotiations with the Commonwealth to include the Wimmera-Mallee Basin in the Murray Darling Basin Plan had smoothed the way for the strategic purchase of the Wimmera irrigation water.

The Wimmera Irrigation District covers about 3200ha.

Irrigators can expected payments from tomorrow.

GWMWater chairman Peter Vogel said irrigators supported the sale, which will deliver 23,000 megalitres a year of environmental water, meeting Victoria's basin plan water recovery target for the Wimmera Mallee Basin.
