THE cool change sweeping across Victoria this morning will bring wild wind to the North East and Gippsland.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for damaging winds for the alps as well as the North Central, North East and West, South and East Gippsland.

Forecaster Peter Newham said wind gusts at Mt Buller had reached 95km/h this morning.

He said just after 9am the change had almost left the Melbourne area after the city reached a top of 28C.

Mr Newham said the wind would create a greater temperature change in the east of the state after the region warmed up during the morning.

The bureau is forecasting high 20s for northern Victoria and low 20s for southern areas for Christmas day tomorrow.
