A GRANDSON accused of murdering his elderly grandparents before torching their house in Melbourne's west has appeared in court.

Ross Konidaris, 24, remained behind a protective glass screen rather than in the open dock, as relatives of the slain couple wept in court, the Herald Sun reports.

The Sunshine West man was charged with two counts of murder and one count of arson hours after he was arrested by police yesterday afternoon.

Police found the bodies of the husband and wife, believed to be in their 80s, in their fire-gutted home on Morven St in Yarraville early on Saturday morning.

A Legal Aid lawyer told the court this was Mr Konidaris' first time in custody and requested he be seen by a psychiatrist as soon as possible.

Fire officers were called to a blaze at the home - where the couple had lived for decades - at 3am on Saturday.

Mr Konidaris will appear in court on April 18 for a committal mention.
