SHEPPARTON has been honoured for its work to create an inclusive society.

Greater Shepparton City Council took home Victoria's Multicultural Excellence Award for Local Government last week.

Minister for Local Government Jeanette Powell, Premier Ted Baillieu, Minister for Multicultural Affairs Nicholas Kotsiras and Minister for Education Martin Dixon presented the award at the Tenth Multicultural Awards for Excellence at Government House last Tuesday.

Mrs Powell described Greater Shepparton as one of Victoria's most multicultural communities.

She said the council's efforts to promote multiculturalism within the community were outstanding.

"Greater Shepparton is recognised as demonstrating its commitment to strengthening a culturally inclusive community,'' Mrs Powell said.

The council's initiatives in support of multiculturalism include the adoption of its first Cultural Diversity and Inclusion Strategy, the appointment of a Cultural Development Officer and the establishment of multi-faith spaces in two of its offices.

"These measures will help develop a more inclusive society where all local people can expect to receive high-quality, culturally-relevant services from the council,'' Mrs Powell said.
