UPDATE: A 22-year-old man has died in hospital following a brawl in a Victorian seaside town.
The Homicide Squad is urging five men who allegedly caused the fight to turn themselves in before CCTV footage leads to their arrest.
The group of five confronted six others outside a pizza shop in Rye, on the Mornington Peninsula, shortly before 1am (AEDT) today, police said.
A 22-year-old Templestowe man, from the latter group, was bashed, causing him to fall and strike his head on the concrete footpath.
He was flown in a critical condition to The Alfred hospital, where his family stayed by his side, but he died around 4pm AEDT today, a police spokeswoman said.
A 23-year-old Warranwood man from the same group was hospitalised with a suspected broken jaw, but was later released and made a statement to police.
Detective Inspector John Potter said CCTV footage captured the brawl, and clearly showed the group of five men as the aggressors.
"There was very little confrontation or exchange (before the violence), it was clearly a group bent on some aggression, whether they were alcohol affected or not we don't know," Det Insp Potter said.
He said the footage means police were confident they would be able to pinpoint those responsible for the violence, and urged them to turn themselves in before police tracked them down.
"Ultimately we're going to be able to identify you and it would be best if you came forward," Det Insp Potter said.
He said two passing vehicles had paused at the scene: a white Toyota Hiace van with a roof rack and ladder on top, and a white two-door hatch with security signage on its bonnet.
He urged them, along with any other witnesses, to contact Crime Stoppers.
