UPDATE: AN early morning crash that killed two people and seriously injured another marks a horror start to the new year on the roads.

Police said the car crashed through a fence and into a front yard on Glebe St at Silkstone about 4.45am this morning.

Two people died in the accident, while another was taken to hospital with a possible fractured skull.

The road has been closed as investigations continue.

Earlier today, two people died in a head-on collision on the NSW north coast.

Two cars collided on the Pacific Highway at Bangalow, near Possum Creek Rd, about 2.20am this morning, police said.

The drivers, a man and a woman, died.

There were no passengers in either car.

The Pacific Highway remains open to traffic, but delays are expected as one lane in both directions will remain closed.

Eleven people have died on NSW roads since the toll period began on December 23, with eight dead in Victoria, six in Western Australia, seven each in Queensland and South Australia, and three in Tasmania.

The Northern Territory and ACT remain fatality free.
