A MAN has been airlifted to a Melbourne hospital with burns to 30 per cent of his body following a fire on a houseboat on Lake Eildon.

The 24-year-old was working on the houseboat at Lake Eildon, about 100km northeast of Melbourne, when fuel ignited, causing a flash fire, an Ambulance Victoria spokesman said.

He suffered burns to 30 per cent of his body, including his hands, face and airways.

Paramedics responded to emergency calls just after 1pm yesterday.

They stabilised the man before he was airlifted to hospital in a critical condition.
