A TOTAL of 48 people died on Australian roads during the Christmas-New Year toll period.

In the last accident, a male motorcyclist was killed in a collision with a four-wheel drive in NSW's Hunter region last night.


NSW recorded the most deaths with a total of 13 during the period, followed by Victoria with nine, Western Australia on eight, Queensland and South Australia recording seven deaths, Tasmania had three and the Northern Territory one.


Only the ACT remained fatality free.


During the last Christmas-New Year period, a total of 50 people died on Australian roads.
