UPDATE: AN ELDERLY woman has died after her car hit a tree at Avenel, near Seymour, this afternoon.

A police statement says officers believe a car was travelling north on the Seymour-Avenel Rd when the driver lost control about 3pm.

The driver and sole occupant of the car died at the scene.

It is the third death on Victorian roads within 24 hours. 

This morning a male driver, believed to be in his 50s, died in a car rollover on the Western Highway at Bungaree.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said the driver was trapped with severe injuries.

He said a helicopter had landed on the road to fly the man to hospital but he died at the scene.

Last night a man was killed in an accident at Tyers in Gippsland.

A statement said a driver believed to be in his 40s died in a crash about 10.20pm.

His car left Tyers Rd and hit a tree.

A male passenger in the car was taken to the Latrobe Regional Hospital in a stable condition with arm and chest injuries.
