DAWSON Hereford stud owners Bill and Annie Lack consider themselves lucky.

They told of their terror when they escaped with just minutes to spare as the fast-moving fire roared towards their house on Friday.

"(The fire) came over so fast we left the two dogs and got in the car," Mrs Lack said.

"We are lucky, as we are alive and the house is OK."

Their 40 stud cattle survived the fire and they have been inundated by offers of hay and agistment.

"The offers I have had have been tremendous, I had hay come in today - another truck is coming in tomorrow," Mr Lack said.

Old friends Fred Bell and Margaret Wastell of Springvale arrived on Saturday to fix the Lacks' burnt-out fences.

The couple are old hands at that job, having volunteered to help rebuild fences after the 2009 Black Saturday fires.

The said they would spend about five days helping the Dawson couple and other local farmers.

"Then we will come up on weekends to help anyone that needs it in the area," Ms Wastell said.

Many other farmers in the fire-affected regions reported most of their stock escaped unharmed and only had small losses.
