A BULL sale that bucks convention will be held in south west Victoria on Saturday.
Most cattle are bred for either beef or milk production, but at Lyons, north of Heywood, the Woodall family has been breeding bucking bulls for rodeos for more than 40 years.
Jack Woodall said his father, Ron, started contracting in the 1970s and set up a line of cows to breed Brahman-cross bucking bulls.
"We're pretty self-sufficient for bulls now," Jack said.
"We now have people coming all the time to buy bulls from us.
"We're breeding about 100 cows a year giving us about 50 bulls each year.
"We probably use about 20," he said.
The Woodall-bred bull Wild Thing was the Professional Bull Riders Bull of the Year in 2009 and a good bucking bull could be worth up to $10,000.
"It depends on what sort of scale you want to buy them, but the great bull is worth $10,000 and A-pen bulls $5000 and up."
Bloodlines represented in the catalogue include Wild Thing, Tomato Juice and Tomato.
The sale will be held at the Lyons-Lower Crawford Rodeo Arena on Saturday at 1pm.
