A MAN has died in a car accident which sparked a grassfire near Beaufort, in Western Victoria, this afternoon.

CFA, police, ambulance and SES crews were called to the single vehicle accident about 1.40pm on Main Lead Rd.

A State Control Centre spokesman said three CFA tankers put out a grassfire near the car.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said the car collided with a tree.

A Victoria Police statement said investigators believed the Holden Commodore sedan was travelling south along Main Lead Rd when it hit a tree.

The driver died at the scene.

Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.

The Victorian road toll stands at 30 deaths for 2013, eight less than this time last year.
