SCOUT wheat and hindmarsh barley are the varieties to plant in the Mallee and Wimmera, says Birchip Cropping Group's Simon Craig.

Mr Craig, research agronomist, was speaking at today's Birchip Cropping group annual trials review and 2012 season research results handbook launch.

The handbook contains results from 100 trials carried out at 15 sites across the Wimmera and Mallee regions last year.

About 140 farmers and advisers have heard about the top performing wheat and barley varieties, incorporating livestock into a no-till cropping system, and guides to growing wheat on summer rainfall, stubble management and weed management.

This afternoon's program includes a 'hypothetical' discussion of what life for farmers would be like without the herbicide RoundUp and agricultural research.
