IT'S official - Deniliquin holds the best festival in Australia.

Locals have known for years that the annual ute fest was the place to be each October.

And now the official stamp has been given in the form of a national award.

The Deniliquin Ute Muster and Play on the Plains Festival has just taken out the festivals and events category in the Australian Tourism Awards, announced late last week.

While the award was for the 2011 event, it recognised the 14-year history of the ute muster which has injected much needed momentum into the area’s tourism industry.

Festival general manager John Harvie said the group was “absolutely thrilled”.

“The Deniliquin community has worked tirelessly for the last 14 years to create an amazing festival,” he said.

This year’s ute muster will be held on October 4 and 5.
